To you, who I saw sitting alone.

(This is dedicated to a young Ugandan girl I saw at a mall in Kampala)

For me, this place is ordinary.

Stairs & shops & signs

People striding sucessfully

up & down shiny mall floors.

But for you,

– sitting silently, uncomfortable

in your Sunday best –

it’s too much.

The smell of earth is dead here.

Replaced by plastic

metal & concrete.

all holding back the world

I, who have flown across the ocean

to this country

want to take your hand,

explain to you

this piece of me.

But the words stay,

locked inside my teeth

while we glance at each other

wild beings in this unnatural place.
